Nanakuli High and Intermediate School School Improvement Status
Summary of Progress
This year has seen considerable improvement at Nanakuli High and Intermediate School (NHIS), specifically in implementing educational standards and enhancing overall school performance.
Since being identified as a Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school in the 2017 Fall,
based on the Strive HI results from SY 2016-2017, NHIS has been on a dedicated path to uplift its academic performance and student achievement. In the 2022-2023 school year, NHIS was classified as a CSI-MRI school, signifying our commitment to ongoing improvement.
In semester one, with a WASC Full Self-Study visit occurring in October 2023, we continued the self- study process and identified our strengths and need areas for improvement.
Three critical needs were identified and have been central to our improvement strategy:
- Enhancing students’ critical thinking skills
- Ensuring academic rigor equitably for college and career readiness
- Implementing support systems and intervention programs to address the achievement gap.
In December 2023, as part of the CSI-MRI process, WestEd conducted a Comprehensive Needs Assessment that validated many of the self-study findings.
To address these need areas, we introduced Instructional Coaching positions that provided valuable support for teachers in classroom instruction and focused on effective learning targets, data analysis process, and implementation of effective student engagement strategies.
An intensive 30/60/90-day plan was also created, with specific focus areas on:
- Tier 1 intervention, emphasizing instructional vision and quality of instruction and curriculum.
- Professional development for staff to ensure teaching quality with PD sessions on Project Based Learning, Effective Learning Targets, and Student Engagement.
- Coherence and planning to ensure effective and efficient use of resources and the refinement of pacing guides, and literacy power standards across all content areas.
- Family and community strengthening with the creation of a Community School Coordinator position.
- Improving school climate and culture under the HMTSS framework by forming an Attendance and HTMSS committee.
- Implementing an Extended Learning Program (ELP) launched in the fourth quarter, focusing primarily on student-athletes that provided these students with additional academic support after school.
These initiatives have played a pivotal role in NHIS's improvement journey this year, allowing us to address our critical needs head-on. We are committed to building upon these improvements in the future to continue elevating our standards and providing a supportive, robust education for all our students
