PART I:  PROJECT WITH SMALL BUSINESS OR NON-PROFIT IN THE COMMUNITY
Honokaa High & Intermediate School will complete 2 major projects with community partners

Name(s) of GEER School Project(s):
Project 1:  Community Thanksgiving Dinner
Project 2:  Community Christmas Festival

Briefly describe the major project (one paragraph):
Community Thanksgiving Dinner:
The project embodies the concept of servant leadership where students learn to put the needs of the school community first then lead to promote school wide effectiveness.  The project is dependent upon the variety of support provided by strong community partnerships.  We have formed 25 major partnerships and 30 additional partnerships in the implementation which allow us to implement a project of this magnitude.  This year’s project is an expansion of last year’s very successful project. We will be preparing to serve 1700 meals including approximately 250 meals to the elderly shut ins in our community (this is an increase of last years all time high numbers).  The project continues to grow and expand through the generosity of our partners.

Community Christmas Festival:
This project also embodies the concept of servant leadership and is being developed based on community need.  The festival will provide an opportunity to bring together the community to share holiday cheer and provide activities not necessarily available in our geographic.  The totally free event which will be focused on the children of the community, will include games and activities, pictures with Santa and much more.  Also included will be story time with Mrs. Claus, as a nod to the importance of literacy, and book giveaways to children being read to. Several crucial partnerships have been formed and will be integral to the success of the project.  At present we have six partnerships outside of the school and are working on securing more partners.

List at least three things that went well:
  1. Enthusiastic partner support
  2. Positive community reception to the projects
  3. The ability to grow the projects with more volunteering to be of help
List two or three challenges
  1. The ability to estimate the number of meals to be served (for Thanksgiving)
  2. Being able to have sufficient budget to implement the Christmas project.
  3. Securing enough volunteers to implement to Christmas project
What was a lesson(s) learned?  (one paragraph)
One of the biggest lessons learned was the reminder of the heart of the community and generosity of our partners when it comes to providing basic needs to our community members especially our keiki and our senior citizens.   Identifying a project which would generate community support along with one that meets the needs of the community was key to developing a project and securing partners.   Sharing the goals of the project with potential partners was important in securing the partnerships which will then allow for successful implementation.
