Briefly describe the status of your project (one paragraph).

This project was a collaborative partnership led by ʻĀina Alliance with support from Kūkulu Kumuhana o Anahola (KKOA), Surfrider Foundation, Kanuikapono Public Charter School, Kapaʻa High School, and more. The focus was on cleaning and restoring Hawaiian Homes undeveloped land along the Anahola coastline to provide safe access and use for educational and recreational purposes. Students from Kapaʻa High School participated in multiple clean up events throughout the year and are helping to document ongoing efforts to clean and restore the coastline area in Anahola.

List down at least three successes (what worked well).
  1. We made connections that strengthened community partnerships opening up future opportunities related to WBL, academy support, and curriculum design and instructional feedback from key stakeholders.
  2. Students participated in service learning alongside Kanuikapono PCS faculty, staff, and students which will lead to future collaboration and support for programs at both Kapaʻa High School and Kanuikapono PCS.
  3. Students that live in Anahola who participated in the project were able to make a real difference in their community.
List two or three challenges:
  1. Students spent Saturday mornings participating in the clean up projects so it was difficult to get more students to participate because of scheduling conflicts.
  2. A couple of students struggled in the early college ICS 101 asynchronous course and had to withdraw early in the semester. We started with 7 and ended with 5.
What was a lesson learned? (one paragraph)

There is a lot of good that can be accomplished with vision, resources, and innovative thinking. I thought this grant accomplished its goal of getting schools to partner together with community organizations for a unified purpose. We also learned that community members and organizations want to collaborate with our schools. Many community partners have time, resources, and expertise that can be leveraged to support academy/ career pathway goals and objectives.
