PART I:  PROJECT WITH SMALL BUSINESS OR NON-PROFIT IN THE COMMUNITY
Name of your project: Kainalu Surf Shop Name(s) of your partner(s):

Briefly describe the major project (one paragraph):

Students utilized the Designing Thinking Process as the foundation for our Growth Through Service project in which Students were given the opportunity to work with Kainalu Surf Shop, a local surf/snack shop located in Nanakuli, Oahu. The essential question students addressed was, “How can “we” help to alleviate the issues faced at Kainalu Surf Shop caused by Covid-19?.”

The students were then given a specific targeted audience and created a Google Slide Deck on their business ideas to help address the essential question. Students then presented their ideas to the owner. Currently, we are waiting on Kainalu Surf to see if the owner, Keoki, would like to move forward on any of the marketing ideas that were presented.

List at least three things that went well:
  1. The owner of Kainalu Surf Shop, “Keoki” came to Nanakuli High to listen to the students' presentations.
  2. Students presented polished, informative and useful material to the owner of Kainalu Surf Shop.
  3. All five of the ICS students are close to completing the course with a passing grade B or A.
List two or three challenges:
  1. There were numerous absences due to school related field trips during Q4 which caused delays in the project.
  2. Students did not have the opportunity to visit the business site due to time constraints during Q4. In the future, we can schedule a site visit early on.
What was a lesson(s) learned?  (one paragraph)

Students learned various lessons throughout the project. First and foremost, students had the task of learning about the Design Thinking Process (DTP) through research and exploration. They were placed into five groups, with each group focusing on one of the five phases. Students then had to create a 1-pager to teach their fellow classmates about the phase they become experts on. As this process was new to most students, it was important for them to utilize the process to enhance their business knowledge. With the use of DTP and the integration of business terms and foundational concepts and skills, students were able to identify their target audiences and pitch ideas to the identified challenges that Kainalu Surf Shop faced.

Areas of focus included:
  • 1-Pager - To be able to identify main ideas and provide effective evidence (Research Skills)
  • Empathy - Thinking-Outside-Of-The-Box ○ Students had to market an unknown item with a specific target audience in mind by connecting and thinking about their specific audience’s needs, wants, and desires.
  • Lessons on creating effective presentations ○ Effective Slide Layout (Readability, Design, Skills
  • (Canva), etc.) ○ Effective Presentation Skills (Voice, Presence, Engagement with Audience, etc.)
  • Mock Presentation Panel

  • Student: ”My favorite unit this year would be working with Kainalu Surf-shop. Although it was a lot of work we saw and did things we never thought we could do. It was also my favorite because we got to have a partnership with the shop and it was a cool experience.”
  • Student: ”My favorite Unit in class this year was doing the Kainalu Campaign Proposal Project because we got to do something that could impact our community
