MISSION We will challenge and motivate students to learn and succeed with PRIDE. |
Kea’au High School is located in the Puna district on the island of Hawai’i, south of Hilo. The high school serves a diverse, primarily rural, population for an area that spans 112 square miles from Volcano down to the Hawaiian Paradise Park community and all areas in between. The 55 acres campus comfortably accommodates our academic and athletic activities for our 1040 students and 100 plus staff members.

We set high expectations for all of our students. Our core values are: perseverance, respect, integrity, diversity, and excellence, or PRIDE; which our students, families, alumni, and faculty show daily through our expectations for academics and athletics.
Upon entering Kea’au High School, freshmen students are placed in our Freshman Academy. Recognized as a model academy by the NCAC in Spring of 2024, the Freshman Academy aims to help students successfully transition to high school. Every student sets goals for future academic and career choices and develops academic, organizational, social emotional, and technological skills while encapsulating PRIDE. This is achieved through common classroom and school expectations within a supportive and rigorous environment, while also providing opportunities for college and career readiness and exploration for all students. Our Academy has seen great success with a low retention rate and increased academic achievement.
Additionally, our school offers twelve different CTE pathways for our students to choose from. Unlike many schools, our students have the opportunity to choose more than one pathway during their time here. We also offer AP courses and Early College classes on campus. We work closely with organizations such as AVID, HETS, and Upward Bound to help give our students the best options for college and career placements. We also have the Ulupono program to help students who have historically struggled with attendance, academics, or behavior issues in school.
All of these things combined have helped us to see improvements in our test scores, graduation rates, and college-going rates as we continue to challenge and motivate our students to learn and succeed with PRIDE.
