Kea`au High School School Improvement Status
Summary of Progress
Kea‘au High School has been able to achieve High Ratings in our ability to have CTE completers. We are very fortunate to have experienced CTE teachers and state of the art facilities.
We were the first school on the East Side of Hawaii Island to offer Computer Science (CS) and are now offering AP CS. We have an above average pass rate in our AP CS.
We have a college going rate of 41% and our Graduation rates have consistently been above 86% each year. Our school offers early college, running start and AP classes for college advancement. We have accomplished double digit percentages above the state in our Algebra II End of Course (EOC) exams but this year EOC for Algebra II was not taken.
We attain an 80% participation rate in sports and have done well with qualifying for the KAIMANA Cup award each year. Athletics requires all athletes to attend study hall or tutoring for 1 hour after school. If they do not attend, they do not practice.
Our school has seen growth over the past three years to a steady 1050 plus student population. We have started on the new 14 CTE pathways but only offer 7 this coming year. We offer all aspects of the music realm from Ukulele to Marching Band and more.
Our school has hosted the Robotics’ competitions and placed for Worlds.
We have a 9th grade Academy that has been able to reduce our retention rate to 4% mean over prior to COVID. Once we were hit with COVID those numbers have changed. We are working on recovery this year and next. This coming year we will be implementing the NSOP Academy structure. We also have a 10th grade cohort working hand in hand with the 9th.
Our school has been able to help the incoming 9th graders with our Summer Bridge Program that allows some of the community to get involved to assist with the 9th grade transition.
We have many of our staff trained in the Trauma Sensitive Schools (TSS) training with strategies incorporated in the classrooms and have refocused our Professional Learning Communities (PLC) for emphasis on academics, formative assessments and vertical alignment. We are also an AVID school and
have AVID in all four grade levels.
We offer free tutoring after school for all students.
We offered more clubs this year for the students' wants and needs.
This is our third year with the CLSD district grant with the focus on literacy and we have incorporated BERC practices that accentuate the CLSD strategies.
