Aiea High School School Improvement Status
Summary of Progress
‘Aiea High School promotes the academic achievement of students through authentic experiences provided within the Academies of ‘Aiea High School. Students choose a program of study in either the Academy of Aspiring Professionals or the Academy of Innovation. In addition to acquiring skills affiliated with their program of study, students also learn the skills needed to continue their education beyond the high school level.
Their College & Career journey begins in the 9th grade with a CTE Foundations course connected to the program of study they select. Freshmen students are guided by a counselor dedicated to supporting their transition to a high school environment. They are cohorted into teams aligned to their academy, including a group of “at promise” students who receive extra academic, behavior, and social emotional support.
Achievement gaps are addressed through the collaboration of teachers engaging in the process of DataDriven Instructional Cycles. Course-alike teachers use data to select instructional strategies that can best address the learning needs of students. After implementing and measuring the impact, next steps are determined to help all students attain content level proficiency. Grade level teams form the foundation of our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and work alongside our counselors to establish interventions leading to increased student achievement.
The ‘Aiea Complex is using Project-Based Learning to enhance student engagement, provide opportunities for students to apply their content knowledge and deepen their understanding of curriculum. AHS has begun developing interdisciplinary projects aligned to academy themes. English, math and science proficiency are supported through projects inviting students to solve real world problems. Student projects were highlighted at two events, the Health Sciences Symposium and the STEM Capstone Showcase.
Providing our students with experiences, opportunities and options for their future is a priority at AHS, aligning with our support of the state’s goal of developing citizens who will be “globally competitive and locally committed”.
