Kaimuki High School School Improvement Status
Summary of Progress
Kaimukī High School’s improvement efforts focused on collective teacher efficacy through the strengthening of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), data teams, and monitoring practices. Accountability through the Academic Review Team (ART) progress monitoring kept the school data informed and able to make appropriate adjustments to our school initiatives to impact the Big 3: Attendance, Achievement, and on-time Graduation. The results of these efforts have led to a double-digit increase in our on-time graduation rate, routine data team practices, and common instructional practices school-wide.
PLCs strengthened teacher practice. Data teams implemented protocols for looking at student work, setting benchmark dates for reviewing data, reporting progress, and utilizing data as a guide to impact student achievement. The Cycle of Professional Learning (COPL) incorporated book study, safe practice, and targeted learning walks to monitor process/progress of school-wide instructional efficacy.
Our Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) facilitated intentional professional learning with regard to aligning to standards and teacher clarity. A heightened awareness of our student needs directed us to refine our Tier 1 instructional practices, specifically learning targets and implementing tutoring during extended school day/extended learning opportunities. Providing our students with clear learning goals and success criteria to build student agency, along with opportunities for students to take more control of their own learning trajectory on the path to college and career readiness, KHS’s Hale ‘Ike (learning framework) aligned resources, services, and initiatives to integrate evidence-based practices and data-informed actions to provide supports and services to impact student achievement.
Kaimukī to College (K2C) continues to expand with more students. K2C is an early college dual credit program. KHS continues to partner with Kapiolani Community College (KCC) and Windward Community College (WinCC) with dual credit opportunities.
