Nestled in the heart of the North Kohala community on Hawaii Island, Kohala High School has been a cornerstone of education since its establishment in 1926. What began as a K-12 institution has grown into three distinct schools—elementary, middle, and high—all united by a shared vision for the Kohala graduate. As we approach our centennial celebration in the 2025-2026 school year, we proudly uphold the Academy of Sustainability motto: "A’ohe U’i Hele Wale o Kohala - No Kohala person goes unprepared." This commitment to a true preK-12 continuum ensures every student is empowered for success.
At Kohala High, our school’s motto, "E Ala e Na Paniolo! - Rise to the Challenge, Cowboys!", highlights our dedication to preparing students for life beyond high school. We are proud to provide an engaging, meaningful, and rigorous program within a standards-based learning environment. Our commitment to student success is evident in our innovative approach, which includes project-based learning, community service opportunities, and internships. These experiences are central to our Academy Model and its four specialized Career Pathways: Natural Resources, Residential and Commercial Construction, Health, and Culinary. We are honored to be the nation's first small school to achieve Model Academy status through NCAC, a testament to our innovative spirit and educational excellence.
Our state-of-the-art STEM Science complex boasts two multi-purpose classrooms and three laboratories for physical science, biological science, and natural resources. This facility opens up opportunities for students to delve into complex problems and forge creative solutions through inquiry and application-based learning. The addition of our Student STEM Center complements the Academy Model and expands upon students’ core content knowledge by providing innovative opportunities for learning through exploration while obtaining critical skills for their future.
We further enhance individualized learning by offering online, early college, and AP classes seamlessly integrated into the daily schedule. Additionally, credit recovery options are available during the school day, after school, and over the summer, ensuring every student receives the support they need to thrive.
Beyond academics, Kohala High’s athletics, clubs, and activities foster holistic student growth. The Student Credit Union, Student Council, and Student Ambassadors provide students with leadership opportunities, while clubs like FFA, FCCLA, Skills USA, HOSA, and eSports provide meaningful connections to student interests and enrich their school experience.
Our purpose is to cultivate well-rounded students grounded in their culture and equipped with strong professional skills. We're committed to preparing them academically, socially, and emotionally, ensuring they have diverse options upon graduation. By helping students discover their strengths and interests, we empower them to confidently transition from high school to a fulfilling career or higher education. We believe that with our community's shared responsibility, every young person in Kohala will gain the tools for independence and success.
