Maui High School School Improvement Status
Summary of Progress
This past year, Maui High School made significant strides toward achieving the goals outlined in our 2023-2024 Academic Plan. Here's a look at some of our key accomplishments:Student Success:
- Strong Foundations: Departments collaborated extensively to ensure curriculum alignment and understanding of state standards. Professional development focused on research-based instructional strategies like the use of AI and data utilization, strategies for deeper learning and differentiation as well as other department-specific professional development.
- Expanded Opportunities: We offered a wider variety of courses, including Advanced Placement and Early College options, along with robust athletics, clubs, and competitions.
- Smoother Transitions: The Freshman Academy, with dedicated staff and a structured approach, eased the transition to high school. A summer bridge program and collaboration with feeder schools further supported
incoming students. - Targeted Support: We expanded English Learner (EL) and Special Education (SPED) support through additional staff, professional development, and targeted programs.
Staff Success:
- Data-Driven Instruction: Content area teams used data to refine curriculum, pacing guides, assessments, and grading policies.
- Effective Induction: We implemented a comprehensive New Teacher Support Program with mentoring, observations, and professional development, ensuring success for new and substitute teachers.
- Professional Growth: Teachers participated in professional development focused on instructional strategies, technology integration, and supporting ELs and SPED students.
- New Bell Schedule: A data-driven approach informed the implementation of a new bell schedule that is being monitored for further adjustments.
- Academies: We created a dedicated Freshman Academy and assigned counselors and administrators to specific
Career Pathways with full implementation next year. - Technology Integration: We've collected data to determine needed technology resources and provided training to staff on the effective use of technology tools.
- Safety & Security: The safety team implemented protocols for maintaining a safe and informed campus environment. This included continued access to PPE supplies, new classroom furniture, and staff training on emergency response procedures.
- Positive School Climate: We established clear behavior expectations and implemented a consistent system for addressing student behavior.
- Improved Communication: We increased communication with families through EL ohana nights, and more frequent newsletters/emails.
We are proud of the progress made this year and excited to build upon these successes in the upcoming school year. We remain committed to providing all students with the support and resources they need to achieve their full potential.
