Maui High School School Improvement Status
Summary of Progress
Maui High School's Academic Plan addresses both the requirements of the HIDOE's Strategic Plan as well as the recommendations that WASC provided us in 2017 and 2021. We have made considerable progress and are closer to meeting our goals in the areas listed below.
Goal 1: Student Success
Academic achievement, as measured by standardized test scores, has increased year over year in Math, Science and Literacy. Maui High’s programs consistently provide standards-based, rigorous learning opportunities to our students. We met our goals to expand our CTE offerings as well as increase our student CTE completer numbers. Our AVID program supported its students in their quest to attend college while our English Learners and our Special Education students were supported through differentiation in the regular education setting, as well as in smaller settings in our resource classes. Students’ social-emotional needs were met in a variety of ways. We implemented a school wide, quarterly SEL initiative this year. It was well received by our students and staff.
Goal 2: Staff Success
We have seen a great increase in the number of quality mentors on campus. This, along with strong support for mentors has created a Mentoring Program that is effective for all. This year, all our new teachers had a veteran teacher as a mentor. Informal surveys indicate that most new teachers find having a mentor extremely helpful to their new teaching career. School-wide professional development goals were met due to the rigorous training our teachers received around curriculum, instruction, assessment and new technologies. In addition, teacher teams used time and resources to gain knowledge and skills in their content areas.
Goal 3: Successful Systems of Support
At the end of the 22-23 school year we will have supplied all classrooms with either Chromebooks or other types of computers. This has been a goal of ours for many years and we are relieved to finally achieve it. We encourage our departments to find and purchase tech-based curriculum and resources so that our students receive well rounded instruction and 21st century skills. Our support systems are varied and have been altered and expanded to better meet the needs of our students and staff. Progress is continuously being made as new technology and ideas are brought to light.
