Campbell High School School Improvement Status

Summary of Progress

The James Campbell High School Academic Plan is aligned to the four Graduate Profile components of the school vision:

  1. Students will be Postsecondary and Career Prepared.
  2. Students will be Compassionate Leaders.
  3. Students will be Innovative.
  4. Students will be Global Citizens.

Students who are able to demonstrate the characteristics of the vision will be successful in any post-secondary and subsequent career path. Student success depends on strong partnerships within and outside the school.

Community partners can provide invaluable insight into real-world application of academic skills Academy advisory boards, made up of school staff, local businesses, university representatives, parents, and students offer continuous support and advice for aligning curriculum and instruction to the world outside. Campbell students update a digital portfolio yearly, assisting students to plan and prepare for the 10 years after graduating high school. Employability Skills, which align to both content standards and General Learner Outcomes, and were created through a partnership with community organizations, are assessed in every class each semester. Qualifying students may apply to earn credit for work based learning experiences while completing an internship with community and business partners. As part of the internship experience, students are required to reflect on their growth in each of the four student success goals.

The Freshman Success Academy (FSA) utilizes relationship building and teaming to meet the unique needs of students. This model utilizes a team of teachers with common students to help build a system of support academically and behaviorally through collaboration. Academy activities include Freshman Orientation Day, Progress Report Conferencing, Registration Awareness Day, Mock Job Interviews, and the District Career Expo.

We have five Career Academies:

  1. Academy of Energy, Natural Resources and Business (AENRB);
  2. Academy of Creative Media (ACM);
  3. Academy of Health Sciences (AHS);
  4. Academy of Public & Human Services (APHS); and
  5. Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (ASTEAM).

The Career Academies are aligned to the National Career Academy Coalition’s National Standards of Practice (NSOPs), collaborate with their advisory boards to ensure that their pathway aligns to industry standards, plan problem–based learning projects (PBL), and provide students the opportunity to earn industry certifications. Within the career academies, all students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) and Early College options which a student can earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. Three Academies underwent review by the National Career Academy Coalition (NCAC) in SY 2021-22, FSA, APHS, and ASTEAM. ASTEAM and APHS received “Model Academy” status, while FSA received “Model with Distinction”, the highest possible national recognition. In SY 2022-23 our final three academies (ABAIB, ACM, and AHS) underwent review and received “Model Academy” status, thus making our school a wall to wall model academy school. Starting in 2023-24 ABAIB will become AENRB - Academy of Energy, Natural Resources and Business)

Math achievement scores in SBA and in End-of-Course exams had been trending down year to year since about School Year 2015. The data spoke to a need for more support, realignment, and deeper analysis of achievement scores. A Math Coach position was created to analyze data, coordinate initiatives, consult with teachers, model effective teaching strategies and advise the Department Head and administration. There was also are alignment of current curricular materials to those standards measured on SBA and EOC exams. The Team found the “Envision” series to be a best fit for the school in Geometry, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2, which was fully rolled out in 2022. In 2021, The Math department also began a fully integrated after school tutoring program targeting 9th grade Algebra 1 students. The program explicitly connects teaching practices in the classroom to tutoring systems after school. The school also began a pull-out RTI system for the school for both Math and English. While there is a full time teacher for the English side of RTI, as of 2023, there is yet only one period allocated for Math pullout RTI time.
